My work centers on two things: software design and engineering team structure. I’ve spent most of my career running large software projects and have strong opinions about what makes them succeed.

I believe that motivated, smart people with clear ownership of a problem and a clear goal will build solutions you never would have thought of yourself. Teams that are empowered to operate their software build better software. Accountability and ownership aren’t management buzzwords, they’re the conditions that make good engineering possible.

On the technical side, I’m a proponent of observable systems. Understanding the current performance of your systems and the shapes of your data is the first step toward improving either. You can’t improve what you can’t measure, and you can’t measure what you haven’t instrumented.
